LAUGHING PROHIBITED!

AT THE BRUINE HEER BUILDING
EMMASINGEL 7, EINDHOVEN

With:
Anthony Kleinepier, Atelier Van Lieshout, Bas van Beek, Erwin Wurm
(AT), Daniel Eatock (UK), Jorre van Ast, Heim Steinbach (US), Helmut Smits, Marti Guixe (ES), Oooms, Atelier Ted Noten en Lara de Greef

Curators: Freek Lomme and Dave Keune
Graphic design: Novak ontwerp

The work displayed in Laughing Prohibited! states that the world is not enough! If we resign ourselves to what we see, we will not get it. There is more to relate to than mere desire. We need to relate to our material environment, the things around us, because we are part in this constellation. A multiplicity of perspectives is proposed, perspectives that alter this relation of ourselves with the world around us.

Laughing Prohibited! enhances an exchange of experiences and knowledge about humour. When do we laugh, why do we laugh and when should we laugh?

Laughing Prohibited! shows us techniques, strategies and issues of conception and representation. This relates immediately to the classic issues of design processes: the form and context of production.

Laughing Prohibited! states this clearly: there is no reason to laugh at all. Is there any (artistic) freedom of speech left after the debates on the Danish cartoons and the AEL counter-cartoons? Should you laugh about the works of these producers, than you are not sincere. Is there the legacy of Theo van Gogh still fertile? We need to concentrate and to focus in order to ask these fundamental questions. To be able to do so, we need clarity and parameters. Therefore, as a start: do not laugh!
Look closely and question: relate!

The exhibition is possible with loans from the collections of the Centraal Museum, Utrecht and the Stedelijk museum SM's 's-Hertogenbosch.

DESIGN MASS

OCTOBER 17-25TH, DUTCH DESIGN WEEK
AT ONOMATOPEE PROJECT SPACE

What fulfils our world? Technology? Aesthetics? The industry rushes forth, developing new technologies that we are accordingly expected to acquire. Designers make these nice, as even iPod’s are gentle to our senses. Despite all of this: what do we really need? Beauty... technological extensions of our body... what do we need?

Onomatopee invited three theoreticians to reconsider these questions. In the context of the Dutch Design Week, they will use the Onmatopee project space as their study. In here, they and the visitors are able to brainstorm and to further develop ideas on these topics. The texts in becoming will be available for discursive browsing. Quotes will be beamed into public space. A book will be published.

On Friday, October 23, 14:00 we will publicly debate these issues with them, at the Van Abbemuseum.

METHOD by Dick Raaijmakers
EXHIBITION AND BOOK PRESENTATION
SEPTEMBER 24TH, 16:00

17-25 OCTOBER , DUTCH DESIGN WEEK

Onomatopee will guest curate a special edition of BALTAN GOES NATLAB dedicated to the English translation of Dick Raaijmakers’ De methode by Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei. Presented in the former Philips NatLab at Strijp-S in Eindhoven, this session will act as an historical inspiration for present day multidisciplinary approaches to technological culture.

Dick Raaijmakers (Maastricht, 1930), technical engineer and one if the founding fathers of electronic music, published De methode (translated as Method) in 1985. De methode dealt with the application of the machine as medium and the role of movers and perceivers within a communication process in a poetic and analytic way. Method is a important vision that investigates communication at the start of a new technological era and is relevant for anybody who looks for an innovative and creative aproach of our (technological) culture.

Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei, artist, linguist, and PhD candidate in philosophy at the European Graduate School (CH) studied the work of Raaijmakers and translated De methode into English. During the presentationg, he will present the findings of his research.
Additionally, graphic design students of the ArtEZ Academy Arnhem will present a series of typographic interpretations of Method, hosted by Remco van Bladel (NL). (ArtEZ teacher and director of Onomatopee)
