On Saturday 30th of March from 1-5pm there will be a selection of launches and workshops related to printed matter at Onomatopee.

This month’s Super Book Saturday will feature the launch of Ted Hyunhak Yoon’s book Decoding Dictatorial Statues. Ted will introduce the collection of images and texts that revolve around the different ways we can look at statues in public space. The launch will coincide with a performance.

Then during a 20 minute talk the artist Pedro Bakker will discuss his publication Innocent under the title: How innocent to draw ‘China girls’? Bakker will be joined by the artist Mickey Yang who will interview him about the concept of ‘China girl’ used in his art while questioning if the title of David Bowie’s song is an objectionable post-colonial concept.

Towards the end of the day, from 3-5pm, students from the Design Curating & Writing Masters at the Design Academy Eindhoven will be running flash fiction workshops. Inspired by ordinary muses, like Bic pens and callipers, you’ll write 55 word stories that will be compiled into a small Riso-printed publication. If inspiration is lacking, the students will guide you on how to choose a muse that suits you.

Eindhoven Footnotes will also de distributing their zine Criticism in the City for free on the day. The permeant research space will also be open for those interested in exploring the relationship between technology and citizenship through objects and acts.

Ted Hyunhak Yoon (b.1987) is a graphic designer-researcher based in Seoul(KR)∙Maastricht(NL). He graduated from MA Visual Communication, Royal College of Art in London, UK. From April 2017 onwards, he is a participant of a residency programme in Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, Netherlands.

Design Curating & Writing is masters course rooted in the practice and performance of research through, about, and alongside design. It pursues a high level of quality, criticality, rigour, and depth in the act of research.

read underneath my desk, sculpt with left-overs, cook in the water fountain, dance ballet in the elevator and spin my bosses’ swivel chair.

Being at work and having to work on a specific task often stimulates the mind to produce stunning phantasies.

But how do we use our work time actually? And what possibilities do we have to act differently at work?

Club de travail (Adeline Molle, Kathi Seebeck, Marine Kaiser) invites you to an afternoon around misappropriation of work time, the redirection of consolidated working policies and the possibility of thereby finding new sense and purpose at work.

We will discuss our specific practices of perruque – a term Michel de Certeau uses to describe how employees (no matter how restricted they are at work) tend to find a gap within their work situations in order to secretly fulfil their own desires.

By producing a collective little booklet we will capture the highlights of the afternoon.

In the context of finissages for two major exhibitions and research projects—one exploring contemporary girlhood, cross-cultural feminism and the relationship between gender, politics and philosophy, the other exploring the notion of the public within the capitalist commons of the high street—public gallery and publisher Onomatopee Projects will launch the publications connected with these endeavours.

Using this momentum they will also launch other publications; including an instruction manual for open ended games, actions and interventions to untrain the body and recondition space; and a publication, which followed a previous exhibition, surveying a meditation on patterns on the fracture of three dimensionality and two dimensionality.

For the exhibition ’Romanian Vistas: The BB7 Travel Agency’ at Onomatopee in Eindhoven, NL, Allard van Hoorn interprets a billboard showing a pixelated composed 360-degree view from Foisorul de Foc, the former central fire-watchtower in Bucharest, as a musical score playing its underlying sonic patterns and relationships determined in collaboration with a synestheet on a graphical synthesizer. This performance is a prelude to the sung version of the actual billboard installed in Bucharest’s periphery as the artists participation in the Biennial (BB7) that takes place from May 26 until June 30.

Moderator Kiko Luijten, design historian and tutor at the St. Joost art school Breda, will speak with designer Niels Schrader of Mind Design (also coordinator graphic design at the Royal Academy Den Haag), artist Kathrin Schlegel and curator/editor and Onomatopee director Freek Lomme on the processing of the book, the facing and dealing with the material available to format into book-form and how to create poetic meaningfulness in this.
Snor magazine, made by Design Academy Students taking the Pulse of their environment, will also intervene during this talk!
