Strijp-S is a hybrid space that embodies the individual and collective cultural histories and heritages of Eindhoven’s industrial past, whilst also existing as a zone of representation for the technological and design-focused future of the city. This makes it both a compelling and complex composite public domain of study, that bridges the public and private, the tangible and intangible and, in turn, space and non-space.
The combination of public places, green spaces and open courtyards, alongside artist ateliers, design studios and luxury shops and cafes that make up Strijp-S today, constructs it as an almost perfect case study for urban renewal and gentrification of the city. Whereas the stark industrial landscape of the area makes its workers' pasts unforgettable, leading us to question who or what exactly make up the “public” of this public space. Meeting Grounds Edition #3 seeks to examine the site of Strijp-S as a composite public space through a public programme of workshops, lectures and events and a subsequent zine-publication. Collectively we wish to explore Strijp-S as a site of industrial-cultural heritage, and to investigate the multiple and often erased histories of the area alongside understanding it as a space of innovation and cultural activity.
For this Edition we will particularly focus on how these multiple narratives, realities, temporalities and histories can sit side-by-side in one singular space, in turn examining the process of a designed cultural heritage through the lens of public space. We therefore seek to ask who is given access to shape and inform this place and space for the city and imagine it’s cultural past and future?
To embark on this active research and presentation we draw from ideas of tangible and intangible heritage and the urban commons to look at topics of space and non-space, shared cultural histories, collective ownership, city design and the changing the urban landscape of Eindhoven, all to explore Strijp-S’s hazy relationship with public space and its long and complex tangible and intangible cultural history within the city of Eindhoven.

Strijp-S is een hybride plek dat de individuele en collectieve culturele geschiedenis en erfgoed omarmt van Eindhovens industriële verleden, maar is ook een zone die de technologische en design-gefocuste toekomst van de stad representeert. Dit maakt het een overtuigend en complex samengestelde openbare ruimte dat connecties legt met openbaar en privé, het tastbare en ontastbare en ruimte en geen ruimte.
De combinatie van openbare ruimtes, groene gebieden en open tuinen, kunstateliers, ontwerpstudio’s, luxe winkels en cafés die vandaag de dag Strijp-S vormen, construeert het als een bijna perfecte casestudie voor stadsvernieuwing en gentrificatie van de stad. Terwijl het industriële landschap van het gebied het werk van voormalige arbeiders bijna onvergetelijk maakt, waardoor we ons afvragen wie of wat precies het ‘open’ van deze openbare ruimte vormt.
Meeting Grounds Editie #2 wil het gebied van Strijp-S onderzoeken als een samengestelde openbare ruimte die connecties legt met openbaar en privé, ruimte en non-ruimte en belichaamt generatie na generatie van tastbaar en ontastbaar erfgoed. Door middel van een gratis openbaar programma van workshops, lezingen, evenementen en met een daaropvolgende zine-publicatie willen we Strijp-S ontdekken als een gebied van industrieel-cultureel erfgoed, om de verschillende en vaak uitgewiste geschiedenis van het gebied te onderzoeken naast het begrijpen van Strijp-S als een gebied vol innovatie en culturele activiteit. Voor de tweede editie willen we begrijpen hoe meerdere verhalen, realiteiten en geschiedenissen naast elkaar kunnen leven in één enkel gebied, op zijn beurt het proces van ontworpen cultureel erfgoed onderzoeken door de lens van openbare ruimtes. We vragen daarom: wie word er toegang verleend om deze plek en ruimte te informeren en vorm te geven voor de stad en zijn culturele geschiedenis en toekomst te verbeelden?
Om aan dit actieve research en presentatie te beginnen, halen we inspiratie uit ideeën rond cultureel erfgoed en stedelijke gemeenschappen om te kijken naar onderwerpen zoals ruimte en non-ruimte, gedeelde culturele geschiedenis, collectief eigendom, stads integratie, branding en het veranderen van het stedelijk landschap van Eindhoven. Het ontdekken van Strijp-S zijn wazige relatie met openbare ruimte en zijn lange en complexe tastbare en ontastbare culturele geschiedenis binnen Eindhoven.
