Quarantaine sessions
De officiële openingsdatum van Residency For The People staat gepland in oktober 2020. Gezien de situatie waar we nu allemaal in beland zijn, lijkt het ons echter zinvol daar niet op te wachten: juist nu de sociale afstand groter wordt en er geen sociale basis lijkt te zijn voor de spontane ontwikkeling van ideeën, wil Onomatopee het voorstellingsvermogen levend houden en kijken hoe we dingen samen kunnen laten gebeuren. Daarom schreven we een open call uit.Tot maandag 27 april konden er voorstellen voor een van de Quarantaine sessions worden ingezonden.
Drie voorstellen zijn geselecteerd:
Niels Swinkels (2004) & Mike van den Tillaar (2004) - Impossible Skateboards Niels en Mike zijn beiden 15 jaar oud en zitten - als het geen corona crisis is - bij elkaar in de klas op het St. Lucas in Eindhoven. Door de lockdown is de school nu natuurlijk gesloten. De twee vrienden zijn beiden fanatieke skaters en zodoende hebben ze een tijd terug het plan opgevat om skateboards te gaan produceren. Eerst zelf de decks persen en ze vervolgens bedrukken met hun eigen grafische ontwerpen. Het nodige technische Youtube-vooronderzoek is al verricht, maar zie het dan nog maar eens allemaal in de praktijk te brengen. Deelnemen aan Residency for the People leek Niels en Mike daarom een uitgelezen mogelijkheid. “Dit is een goede kans om meteen goed te beginnen omdat we nu de tijd hebben, coaching en een goed bedrag wat we erin kunnen steken”
Peter Wijnen (1962) & Teresa Rahder (1960) - Sengersbroek
Peter Wijnen en Teresa Rahder runnen samen Sengersbroek in Heusden: een kleinschalige boerderij met kippen, varkens, een moestuin en een gastenverblijf. Dat gaat tijdens een corona-crisis allemaal in volle vaart door, maar omdat ze een eerder plan heel graag nieuwe energie in willen blazen, hebben ze zich toch opgegeven voor Residency for the People. “Kort door de bocht: het creëren van een gezonde plek voor mens, dier en milieu is wat ons voor ogen staat. Het mag gedragen worden door meer mensen dan nu het geval is (wij twee), jong en oud.” Om dit te bereiken zouden Peter en Teresa graag meerdere woningen op het terrein van Sengersbroek realiseren. Waar te beginnen? Het is een grote vraag, met tussen droom en daad een heleboel praktische bezwaren - en wetten bovendien. Deze residency zal worden gebruikt om de droom aan te scherpen en te verbeelden. Hopelijk een goede basis om later tot daden over te kunnen gaan.
Ines Glowania (1990) - A book for me
Ines is in 2019 afgestudeerd aan Design Academy Eindhoven aan de master Information Design. Nu woont en werkt ze als ontwerper in Keulen (ze is ook een Duitse). “My situation is quite simple. I am staying in my 25qm apartment in Cologne everyday. That is why I am applying to the Residency for the People. I need a push, a reason to continue what I want to do, even though I know I should do it anyway.” Wat Ines wil doen is een boek maken. Dat doet ze als grafisch ontwerper wel vaker, maar die boeken zijn altijd bestemd voor ‘de ander’; een opdrachtgever, docent of geïnteresseerde lezer. Er is altijd een buitenwereld die het boek onder ogen krijgt en waar dus ook tijdens het maken telkens rekening mee is gehouden. Zo niet deze keer. “I will design a book for myself. A book that no one except me will see. Never have I known my client so well.” Een goed boek maken kost geld en tijd. De tijd heeft Ines gezien de corona-crisis al, een startbudget nu ook via Residency for the People.
expositie
Van 18 juni tot 23 augustus exposeren we de resultaten van de Quarantaine sessions. Je vind er de 'impossible skateboards' van Niels en Mike, gemaakt met dank aan Studio Jeroen Wand; de schetsontwerpen gemaakt voor de nieuwe architectuur van Sengersbroek en het boek van Ines.
Over de Residency For The People
Residency For The People is een artist in residency plek die open staat voor iedereen (dus niet alleen voor kunstenaars, ontwerpers en schrijvers). Residency For The People biedt ruimte tijd en onverwachte inspiratie en netwerk voor het ontwikkelen en realiseren van projecten waar je in het dagelijks leven geen ruimte voor hebt (of maakt), maar die je wel graag verder zou willen onderzoeken.
Planning
De Quarantaine Residency sessions vonden plaats in mei. De expositie van de resultaten wordt vanaf medio juni gepresenteerd. Ook maken we vervolgens een krantje dat gratis zal worden verspreid.

About Residency For The People
Residency For The People is an artist-in-residence programme that welcomes everybody (so not only artists, designers or writers).
This residency offers space, time, unexpected inspiration and a network to help develop your ideas. For you to realise a project which takes up no space in your daily life (because you simply don’t have the time or you don’t make the time for it) but one that you would like to investigate further.
Quarantaine sessions
The official launch of the opening of Residency For The People is planned for October 2020. However, due to the current situation there is no need to wait. Right now, as social distancing in enforced and methods of restriction are increasing, the social base for the creation of spontaneous ideas is becoming limited. Onomatopee wants to keep the development the imagination alive and to figure out how we can make this happen together.
Therefore this open call is for everybody and anybody who is currently not working, wondering what to do, anybody who is thinking about the future or trying to process this current state of “inbetweeness”. This open call is for the people who have had good idea that is worth pursuing. Residency For The People gives you the opportunity to be part of one of our three Quarantaine sessions.
Open Call
Until April 27th the call was open. Three proposals were selected:
Niels Swinkels (2004) & Mike van den Tillaar (2004) - Impossible Skateboards Niels and Mike are both 15 years old and - if not for the corona crisis - they would be sitting together in the classroom at St. Lucas in Eindhoven. Due to the lockdown, the school is now of course closed. The two friends are both avid skaters and that is why they came up with the plan to produce skateboards some time ago. First press the decks yourself and then print them with your own graphic designs. The necessary technical YouTube preliminary research has already been done, next step: how to roll this plan into reality. Niels and Mike therefore thought that participating in Residency for the People was an excellent opportunity. "This is a good chance to start right away because we now have the time, the coaching and a good amount of money we can put into it".
Peter Wijnen (1962) & Teresa Rahder (1960) - Sengersbroek
Peter Wijnen and Teresa Rahder run Sengersbroek in Heusden together: a small-scale farm with chickens, pigs, a vegetable garden and a guesthouse. This all continues at full speed during a corona crisis, but because they were looking forward to revive an earlier plan, they have nevertheless signed up for Residency for the People. “In short: creating a healthy place for people, animals and the environment is what we envision. It should be run by more people than is currently the case (the two of us), young and old. ” To achieve this, Peter and Teresa would like to realize several houses on the grounds of Sengersbroek. Where to start? It is a big question, with a lot of practical objections - and laws - between dream and deed. This residency will be used to sharpen and visualize the dream. Hopefully a good basis for taking action later.

She often does that as a graphic designer, but those books are always intended for "the other"; a client, teacher or interested reader. There is always an outside world that sees the book and which has therefore always been taken into account during the making. But not this time. “I will design a book for myself. A book that no one except me will see. Never have I known my client so well. ” Making a good book costs money and time. Due to the corona crisis Ines already has the time. The starting budget is provided by Residency for the People.
Credits
Residency For The People is an Onomatopee project. The Quarantaine sessions will be mentored digitally by Lucas Maassen, initiator of Residency For The People.
Schedule
The Quarantaine sessions will take place in May 2020. The results of the sessions will be launched mid June via the website and the social media networks of Onomatopee. We will also make a small booklet which will be distributed around the city for free.
