Birding excursion x RISO zine making

Two-part gathering that brought together bird enthusiasts, artists and researchers

Onomatopee

A two-part gathering that brought together bird enthusiasts, artists and researchers for a shared inquiry into the ecological and poetic life of wetlands—initiated as part of the with a Bird, programme. Read along for a short recap written by curator Marjolein van der Loo and captured by photographer Nick Bookelaar.

Birding Excursion

"Saturday, April 12, at dusk we visited the Biesbosch with artist/curator Margarida Mendes and birder Arjan Loeve. April is the busiest month for bird(er)s in the Netherlands, and the Biesbosch is a unique stopover location for migrating birds.

As part of the exhibition with a Bird, we invited a group of artists to this excursion and soon following riso workshop. Through listening and observing, we searched for allies to think with about wetlands. In conversation, we weaved together different practices and artistic research projects around bird hunting and song imitation, bird migration, relations between song and environment, and the ecological role of wetlands.

Some highlights were the white-tailed eagle, Montagu’s harrier, and Cetti warbler, perhaps even a Eurasian Bittern was heard ;)."

Collective RISO zine making

"In the weeks following the excursion, participants of the birding excursion developed contributions in response to their experience—visuals, texts, traces—culminating in a collective risograph workshop at Onomatopee. With support from the RISO team, we printed and assembled our materials in one day into this edition, which was presented during the finissage of with a Bird,.

The pages that follow are not a documentation, but a continuation. A small ecosystem of voices, textures, and sightings—each shaped by the act of looking, listening, and responding in and with the landscape."

The excursion and RISO zine publication are part of with a Bird, an exhibition and research program that explores how we relate to birds— through observation, imagination, folklore, science, and care.

Now presented at the RISO Salon and for sale at Onomatopee for €15,-.
