Defining the Battle Lines

An exhibition, two publications and Riso printing

Defining the Battle Lines is an exhibition presenting more than a century of complex analysis on gender liberation spanning the globe. A joint project between Onomatopee and Revolting Press, this installation accompanies the book launch of Not My Sister: Proletarian Women Define the Battle Lines.

Both the installation and publication represent three critical works from lesser-known but brilliant scholars — from early revolutionary Soviet Union to Depression-era New York to guerilla camps in the jungles of India, each perspective defines the goal of gender liberation, illuminates what solidarity looks like, and articulates what it takes to bring this goal to fruition. This first limited book edition of Not My Sister is riso printed and assembled in-house at Onomatopee.

The Walk, The Parade, The Pavilion and The Sticker. A group walk & risograph sticker printing workshop between Van Abbe Museum and Onomatopee.

Walks, parades, maps and stickers function as powerful tools. They can unearth how physical and immaterial forces are interwoven, and act as a forensic exercise that reveals elements of unnoticed livelihood, traces of profound mutations, and poetic moments that stand as (in)visible markers of the life of a city.

The walk between Van Abbe Museum and Onomatopee will look at specific urban conditions of two cities, Eindhoven and Chemnitz (former Karl-Marx-City). At first glance, these two cities don’t appear to have any obvious connections or similarities. However, through the process of walking, parading and mapping we will begin to understand how the silent and ephemeral forces that meet us on the street speak of the causal connections that bind these two cities together. The group walk will be followed by a Riso printing workshop at Onomatopee, where there will be an opportunity to design and print stickers inspired by the walk.

The publication The Walk, The Parade, The Pavilion and The Sticker: A dialogue between two post-industrial cities focuses on the walk as an artistic method and addresses the ambivalence between a ‘walk’ and a ‘parade’. The talk, walk and workshop are led by Barbara Holub and Jaspar Joseph-Lester, in collaboration with Van Abbe Museum and Onomatopee

Proletarian Women Define the Battle Lines

Sold out

Not My Sister features three critical works that define the battle lines within the program of gender liberation. Illuminating what solidarity looks like and the steps we take to achieve it.

The three sections of this book give distinct perspectives on how and why alliance with women of the upper-classes (and female employers who leverage their power through exploitation) won't result in our freedom. All three segments study the goal of gender liberation and articulate what it takes to bring it to fruition.

It addresses on a global scale what is required to engage in true solidarity, and how we fight to win.

Not My Sister is co-published with Revolting Press.
