Designing Decolonial Language
In our effort to shape, mold, decompose and reconfigure the world around us, language plays an important role. Sometimes for the good, other times for the bad; language withholds a powerful position. During Dutch Design Week, Onomatopee invites the makers of Intimate Negrociations and Field Essays - “Éloj Kréyol” (Creole Praise) - two publications that deal with this and other topics surrounding decolonialism - to talk about the efforts they made in designing decolonial language.
The words in the texts that Bodé Owa has written for Intimate Negrociations are not cloaked in any glamorous gowns, they are bare naked. They release a reality which confronts without aggressive shouting or fierce moralising. Together with Griet Menschaert (artist, editor) and Celine Hurka (graphic designer) Bodé Owa (writer) will delve into the content of his publication, uncomfortable topics like racism and the continuing legacies of colonialism that lie within it and the ways in which these are expressed.
In Field Essays - “Éloj Kréyol” (Creole Praise) the specific decolonial and tactile research approach of Paris-based design-duo dach&zephir is explored. Writer and curator Lucy Cotter, art historian Thomas Golsenne and Martiniquan sociologist and poet André Lucrèce reflect, analyse and comment on the process of creolisation and decolonialism through the work of dach&zephir. Initiator and artist/researcher Sophie Krier will join in on the conversation to talk about how she - together with all contributors - meandered through decolonialism.

Bodé is passionate about social justice and equity, about his culture and continent, about the world. It is very obvious in this book which contains love notes to Africa, and which, though filled with humor, doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable topics like racism and the continuing legacies of colonialism. Negrociations invites us into its writer's rage and into his passion, and challenges us to work for a better world.

Bode Owa was born in Lagos, Nigeria but now lives in Antwerp, Belgium.
He attended St. Finbarr’s college, Lagos, Jazz studio, Antwerp and Het Hoger Instituut voor dans, Lier, where he later lectured for five years. He has travelled extensively as a freelance actor, dancer and musician.
He wrote and staged the plays, Black Vlaming, Towering Trees, Visible roots, Negrociations...
He is an avid realist.
