This workshop is designed for those who have already attended our first Intro to RISO session or have prior experience with risoprinting. Together, we’ll explore color gradients, blending, and advanced printing techniques to take your RISO skills to the next level.

This 5-hour workshop is taught in English. We’ll start with coffee and tea. We’ll review techniques like overprinting, dot screens, and color interactions, followed by file preparation and hands-on time at the RISO-printer. Everyone will get a chance to print 5 copies of their own design using two RISO spot colors.

The workshop fee covers all materials (paper, ink, and printer usage), along with 5 A3 prints of your own design on EOS 90g paper.

IMPORTANT NOTE

This course focuses on color techniques and assumes basic familiarity with the risograph. It covers file preparation (color separation and export process), but it does not cover the design process. Please make sure to bring to class a laptop with Adobe Photoshop installed (we’re going to need it to work on your files) and your finished design/image. Participants that don’t have their design/image ready won’t be able to take the class.

Not sure what to print? No problem—this workshop is all about color experimentation! We recommend starting with something simple, like a 2-color gradient poster or a bold shape layered over a gradient background. Join 11.11 Collective for a one-day crash course during Dutch Design Week 2025, where creative coding meets RISO! Throughout the day, we will experiment with generative coding to create unique digital sketches, bring them to life in After Effects, and eventually translate them into risograph animations. In this experimental workshop, Marvin Sipma, Seven Shepherd, and Sebastiaan Paap will each share their expertise, guiding participants step by step through the entire process on how to make this one-of-a-kind animation.

In this hands-on workshop, you will:

About 11.11 collective

Based between Rotterdam and Barcelona, 11.11 Collective consists of three former classmates who collaborate to explore the intersection between analog and digital methods. Founded in 2022 by Marvin Sipma and Seven Shepherd who began experimenting with RISO animations, the collective expanded in 2024 with Sebastiaan Paap, bringing creative coding into the mix. By translating coded visuals into risograph, 11.11 embraces the unpredictable nature of both ink and code in their practice. This risograph workshop by Moran Smithwick, invites you to explore and visualize ways of considering time through the experimental process of a layered print.

Drawing from alternative knowledge systems, we will question constructed understandings of time and investigate how it is felt, remembered, and imagined through our earthly experiences. We will spend the morning drinking coffee and tea and discussing time as a design method. During this conversation, we will introduce prompts and ways of archiving your own temporality. We will talk about different artists who thicken, reposition, and visualize time. We will touch on earth time, deep time, kinship time, queer time, crip time, and more ways of understanding, interpreting our world by thinking differently about time.

In the afternoon, through layering and the materiality of the risograph, we’ll give form to pasts, presents, and possible futures, tracing how time flows through and around us. The texture and transparencies of color will allow for time to be intermixed, rewoven, and we will talk about the hierarchy of those layers and how they might lend itself to the meaning of the print.

No risograph or design experience necessary. You are welcome to bring premade drawings or designs to experiment with.

Moran Smithwick is an MA candidate in Design Expanded Practice at Goldsmiths University of London with a concentration in Cultures and Ecologies. She is a producer, art director, and graphic designer. Alumni of Pratt University’s Critical and Visual studies program, Moran engages with design practice through a socially and critically informed background. The workshop will be hosted by Paul Eßer and Francesco Scheffczyk, both research assistants at KITeGG. The workshop is based on their research about the democratisation and accessibility of AI interfaces.

KITeGG is a four-year joint project that aims to connect technology and society through design. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and four federal states. Participants include Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Trier University of Applied Sciences, the Cologne International School of Design (TH Köln) and the Offenbach and Schwäbisch Gmünd Universities of Applied Sciences.

Programme:

In this Make-a-zine workshop you will learn the Introductory basics of how to create small-scale print publications on risograph. Participants are given a template for how to make a quick-and-dirty A6-sized folded zine from A3 risoprinted paper. The instructor will lead everyone through the process of compiling/creating your imagery/text and either printing via the computer, or directly scanning into the riso duplicator to create your zine.

You’ll walk away with a beautiful 15-copy set of your newly printed zine to share with the world.

What you need to do:

Bring a series of pictures and texts that you’d like to add to your zines (or drawing tools to create your images). Each zine will require eight A6-sized pages of artwork, and one A3-sized poster image (that can be seen once the zine is unfolded).

If you plan to do your zine old-school through the scanner, bring physical copies of whatever you’d like to collage and assemble together. Otherwise, bring a laptop and digital files.

What will happen:

We’ll do a demonstration of our A3 risographs, then we will support you with whatever you need to know as you assemble your images and texts. Once your are complete, each participant learns how to operate the machinery and produces a 2-color zine.

This 5-hour workshop (10.00 - 15.00) is taught in English. We'll have coffee and tea, go through an introduction to the history of the risograph, followed by a demo of the A3 risoprinter, and a lesson on how to set up your zine. There will be a lunch break after which everyone gets to print their designs. The workshop fee includes 15 copies of your 2-color risoprinted zine, a mini RISO guide by Onomatopee, and a list of resource links sent after the workshop.
